The English and Welsh Pitted in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales will face off in an identical group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated early clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

The Irish alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 victory, with their opponents failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Implications

If the groups conclude in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and France would remain separated from both the English and Ireland until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 stage for the very first time in the competition's history.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
